Hello everyone..Ghmera Krekshi from Libya. Social worker, coordinator of women working group in Peacemaking, Deputy of Libyan Women Union /Tripoli and member of Femi-wise-Africa

Ms. Margarita Dalton, born in Mexico City, she received her bachelor's degree in history in Havana, Cuba, her master's degree in Accra, Ghana, Africa and her doctorate in Geography and History at the Central University of Barcelona, Spain. Professor and researcher at the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social, (Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology, CIESAS), her research and study topics are history, literature and culture. In the last thirty-five years she has conducted research with a gender perspective and her field work has been in various indigenous communities in Oaxaca. She has published more than a dozen books and hundreds of essays, articles in books, magazines, press and electronic media. She has researched on the political participation of women in the municipalities of Oaxaca and as a result of this research produced a book “Democracia e igualdad en Conflicto: El caso de las presidentas municipales en Oaxaca”

Professor Andrea Cornwall is the Pro-Director Research & Enterprise at SOAS and a Professor of Global Development and Anthropology. She is a political anthropologist who specialises in the study of democratic innovation, citizen engagement, participatory research, gender justice and sexual rights. Her research focuses on power, inclusion and rights, and includes work with domestic and sex worker rights movements in Brazil and India, reproductive and sexual health in Zimbabwe and Nigeria, citizen participation and accountability in health policy and governance in the UK, Nigeria and Brazil, and on contestations over gender, empowerment and rights in international policy arenas. Andrea’s recent publications include publications include "Beyond Empowerment Lite’: Women’s Empowerment. Neoliberal Development and Global Justice" and "Masculinities under Neoliberalism".

Mr. Bafana Khumalo is the Co-Chair of MenEngage Alliance. MenEngage Alliance isa global alliance made up of dozens of country networks spread across many regions of the world, hundreds of non-governmental organizations, as well as UN partners. MenEngage members work collectively and individually toward advancing gender justice, human rights and social justice to achieve a world in which all can enjoy healthy, fulfilling and equitable relationships and their full potential. Through our country-level and regional networks, MenEngage seeks to provide a collective voice on the need to engage men and boys in gender equality, to build and improve the field of practice around engaging men in achieving gender justice, and advocating before policymakers at the local, national, regional and international levels. Mr. Khmalo is also a member of the Senior management team at Sonke Gender Justice serving as a Co-Executive Director and as one of the organisations’ co-founders.

@Olusola Ojo NE Brazil was just like this and the programme brought about change in that context. The key is to use education as a tool for consciousness raising amongst men as well as women - the challenge is getting people in but conditional cash transfers can be a pathway of change if the conditions include attending training.

@Anna - yes, backlash is real and it’s happening everywhere including in the UK, and I think this is where international organisations and national civic organisations are needed, including to build feminist political power to win elections and change governments!

@Maria, this is a really interesting question - and down to how much progressive local government can do in the context of reactionary national government

political power (at decentralised and national level) is a matter of lobbying and get your interests and needs on the agenda, what are the mechanisms of women lobbyist that work, which skills do we need to strengthen and how can dimitra clubs influence political power and link with decentralisation processes

Dear Andrea, great to hear your presentation. Can you expand on empowerment strategies adopted to address power inequities as women engaged on networking. How transformational collective action was nurtured?

Very interesting

@diane they worked with children through the childcare provision that was part of the programme - but it would be worth evaluating that and the impact of children seeing their mothers gain more freedom, agency and respect. Anecdotally, women talked of how their children had seen that there were alternatives to the jobs their parents had as casual labourers on the sugar cane plantations. In that respect, it expanded their horizons of possibility.

Ms. Hajnalka Petrics is a Programme Officer (Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment) at FAO and the Global Coordinator of the United Nations Rome-based Agencies (RBAs) Joint Programme on Gender Transformative Approaches for Food Security and Nutrition, implemented with financial support from the European Union.

Hajnalka has played an instrumental role advocating for and providing technical support to global policy processes, including the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) Workstream on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in the Context of Food Security and Nutrition and the development of the CEDAW General Recommendation 34 on the rights of rural women. Previously, in her role as Gender and Development Officer, she led FAO’s work on gender-responsive rural advisory services, CEDAW implementation and related policy assistance as well as the development of the FAO Country Gender Assessment methodology.

Prior to joining FAO headquarters, Hajnalka worked as Rural Development and Gender Technical Officer in the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia. She holds a PhD in International Cooperation and Sustainable Development Policies and an MA in Political Science from the University of Bologna. Regarding to food security which is a part of the general security in Libya. Most of Economic activities are standing by export even we have multiple resources beside the oil. High numbers of widows and Orphans resulted from the conflict, loosing a lot of benefits which they gained during Gaddafi's regime whether in care or within law. we had an Agriculture project all over Libya with Training and Empower centers for the Rural communities...everything collapsed after 2011

Boys and men too, are very often ignorant about menstrual issues.This fact is many a times the base for fake interpretations, sometimes called “cultural values”, that keep and had to women’s rights suppression. Engaging boys and men in achieving gender equality efforts is a must, also because some of the root causes of gender discrimination are structural and affect everyone.

Legal paternity leave is a tremendous tool to allow men understand what is child caring about, where possible.

spot on Andrea. I am in Barbados and working largely in the Caribbean and there are conversations i can have in rural Mozambique and Gambia that are not as easy to have in the Caribbean.

we also need to engage women on gender. it is not automatic. some of the deep resistance we face is from women as well as from men. something we also need to accept and prepare for.

@leisa you are so right - women can be the ones guarding and reproducing patriarchal values. Deniz Kandiyoti’s “Bargaining with Patriarchy” has a really interesting analysis of this.

Es importante pensar en una nueva redistribución de las riquezas y para ello es importante la nueva distribución del poder, las riquezas y la inteligencia de quienes han sido oprimidas por siglos. Es un gran reto para el cambio y lo estamos dando, desde dientes frentes."
