Hello Husna Mbarak

04:38:50

Gracias

04:44:02
Muchas gracias

04:44:22
gracias 🙏

04:44:34

Question to Prof Andrea.: What strategy can you suggest or recommend for a conservative context like the Northern Nigeria where culture does not really permit much equality drive between males and females In terms of their community roles and societal obligations? Thank you

05:02:17
Prof. Cornwall, thank you for an incredible presentation. I wonder what are your thoughts on the situations when the state stops "caring" about women and the institutions, perhaps even deliberately, start failing women's empowerment goals and commitment to gender equality?

05:04:17
So inspiring, thank you Andrea

05:04:59
So powerful! So great to see how community engagement and women's own testimonies share how these transformative experiences enable the capabilities that were so important to Nussbaum and Sen, on the ground and with each other.

05:05:08
Thank you for this great presentation Andrea!

05:05:33
thank you Andrea for this inspiring story! You spoke about this programme in the past tense... Does it still exist and what is happening today?

05:06:02
Amazing presentation Professor Andrea and a very powerful quote!

05:06:53
Thank you Andrea, is the program working with young girls?

05:07:50
Mr. Bafana Khumalo is the Co-Chair of MenEngage Alliance. MenEngage Alliance isa global alliance made up of dozens of country networks spread across many regions of the world, hundreds of non-governmental organizations, as well as UN partners. MenEngage members work collectively and individually toward advancing gender justice, human rights and social justice to achieve a world in which all can enjoy healthy, fulfilling and equitable relationships and their full potential. Through our country-level and regional networks, MenEngage seeks to provide a collective voice on the need to engage men and boys in gender equality, to build and improve the field of practice around engaging men in achieving gender justice, and advocating before policymakers at the local, national, regional and international levels. Mr. Khmalo is also a member of the Senior management team at Sonke Gender Justice serving as a Co-Executive Director and as one of the organisations’ co-founders.

05:09:25
@Olusola Ojo NE Brazil was just like this and the programme brought about change in that context. The key is to use education as a tool for consciousness raising amongst men as well as women - the challenge is getting people in but conditional cash transfers can be a pathway of change if the conditions include attending training.

05:09:55
Thank you Andrea. How much and how far the state can do as enabler of women's empowerment. How are the women faring under the new government?

05:10:39
Many thanks for your questions, we will address them in the last part of the webinar

05:11:14
@Anna - yes, backlash is real and it’s happening everywhere including in the UK, and I think this is where international organisations and national civic organisations are needed, including to build feminist political power to win elections and change governments!

05:12:33
@Maria, this is a really interesting question - and down to how much progressive local government can do in the context of reactionary national government

05:13:48
political power (at decentralised and national level) is a matter of lobbying and get your interests and needs on the agenda, what are the mechanisms of women lobbyist that work, which skills do we need to strengthen and how can dimitra clubs influence political power and link with decentralisation processes

05:14:02
Dear Andrea, great to hear your presentation. Can you expand on empowerment strategies adopted to address power inequities as women engaged on networking. How transformational collective action was nurtured?

05:14:12

05:14:28
Please, is it to share this presentation with us?

05:14:41
Very interesting

05:14:50
@diane they worked with children through the childcare provision that was part of the programme - but it would be worth evaluating that and the impact of children seeing their mothers gain more freedom, agency and respect. Anecdotally, women talked of how their children had seen that there were alternatives to the jobs their parents had as casual labourers on the sugar cane plantations. In that respect, it expanded their horizons of possibility.

05:15:12

05:15:18
@Macrar Yes the presentation will be shared after the webinar

05:16:03

Thank you Bafana thank you. Please can you share some practices on how men engaged for gender equality and supporting women and women groups manage their power in very conservative communities to ensure women/women groups have the power/lead ?

Regarding to food security which is a part of the general security in Libya. Most of Economic activities are standing by export even we have multiple resources beside the oil. High numbers of widows and Orphans resulted from the conflict, loosing a lot of benefits which they gained during Gaddafi's regime whether in care or within law. we had an Agriculture project all over Libya with Training and Empower centers for the Rural communities...everything collapsed after 2011

05:29:37
Boys and men too, are very often ignorant about menstrual issues. This fact is many a times the base for fake interpretations, sometimes called “cultural values”, that keep and had to women’s rights suppression. Engaging boys and men in achieving gender equality efforts is a must, also because some of the root causes of gender discrimination are structural and affect everyone.

05:34:31
change from inside

05:34:56
Indeed Christiane, real change is always endogenous

Legal paternity leave is a tremendous tool to allow men understand what is child caring about, where possible.

05:48:17
spot on Andrea. I am in Barbados and working largely in the Caribbean and there are conversations i can have in rural Mozambique and Gambia that are not as easy to have in the Caribbean.

05:49:47
we also need to engage women on gender. it is not automatic. some of the deep resistance we face is from women as well as from men. something we also need to accept and prepare for.

05:50:36
@leisa you are so right - women can be the ones guarding and reproducing patriarchal values. Deniz Kandiyoti’s “Bargaining with Patriarchy” has a really interesting analysis of this.

05:50:51
Muchas gracias Margarita!

05:53:02
thanks andrea. i will check it out.

05:53:41
not only providing information but reflecting together on the consequences is always important

05:54:16
@bafana this is really important - men can be champions of change once they recognise the harm that patriarchal attitudes and practices do

FROM MARGARITA:

05:56:58

05:57:26
Thank you Bafana, really fascinating examples and strategies , very respectful of human rights and improving governance
