Wow the SHEP is an excellent approach since it’s market-oriented. The market and demand for sweet potatoes are increasing worldwide. Smallholder farmers can really benefit from growing this crop, it’s drought-resistant, which makes it make it excellent for our climate. The highest importers are Germany and Netherlands. Please share the slide for the Kenya SHEP results in PowerPoint.

JICA institute conducted a research to measure the impact together with professors in university by using the methodology of Randomized Control Treatment (RCT). The result had surprised us. I believe that we’ll be able to provide the result later. Anyway, it means the impact of SHEP approach was presented academically.

Minister touched on important points regarding market research in order to have an idea on what is in demand and how the end consumer wants it, however, one can not forget that Mpumalanga is a prime area and can be export quality and we continue fight for that local and export market pace. Here a problem arises that retail markets - example pnp- request pictures of produce before purchasing and that in planting and selling and not planting to sell.

02:13:23
Is. happy with the information shared regarding SHEP and its objectives. I am only saddened by the number of participants whom mostly represent officials in agricultural departments and not necessarily the target market which is mostly the farmers. We need to find a way of reaching farmers if not through this kind of meetings as they may be restricted by data costs or simply technological phobia. For the farmer association that have attended I applaud you and please share this crucial information back with your constuencies

02:38:05
Are there provincial/municipal officers that farmers can engage with that are directly involved in the SHEP programme? Or should farmers engage with SHEP directly?

02:40:09
Farmers need to be careful when considering sending produce to the FPM. There certainly is value in FPM but we must consider and take into consideration the fact that a lot of farmers especially some of the larger commercial farmers are by-passing the FPM and going directly to market through retailers. These retailers have formed extensive supply chain and logistics networks and most deliveries now take place through their DC's. Would suggest smallholder farmers work together to both consolidate their produce but plan, market and sell through integrated platforms. There is strength in size and numbers. Even the agents at the FPM want consistency of supply and prefer significant volumes that the individual farmer cannot achieve.

02:41:45
I believe we need to be protected from the bullies of market, I'm a young farmer who's been battling to break even from my sales..ive been forced to sell my produce at a set price for more than 3 years, when we request for a price review you get told to go look somewhere else. Please minister assist us as government to regulate the market and prices.
