Description
The school food system is a fertile platform for innovations and scale up of interventions with potential to improve multiple sustainable development outcomes and increasingly recognized as an entry point for broader food system transformation. However, the actual impact of many interventions depends on their design, implementation and coherence with other policies and procedures of the school food system. Partners of the School Meals Coalition are working to help governments enhance school meal programs and related initiatives. Two projects are leading this effort: • FAO and WFP’s global project “School food nutrition guidelines and standards for safeguarding children and adolescents’ right to food” helps countries design robust, holistic nutrition standards that go beyond meal composition. It also provides guidance on key implementation areas, including sustainable procurement practices. • SchoolFood4Change (SF4C) empowers schools as drivers of systemic change, training cooks, caterers, and public procurers while promoting locally adaptable solutions for schools, meal providers, and policymakers. Active in 12 EU countries, it aims to create a broad impact, reaching up to two million citizens. This first webinar in a three-part series will explore how to meaningfully involve schoolchildren and adolescents in decision making, programme planning, implementation and monitoring of school food and nutrition programmes and policies. Held in English, it is designed for school food youth activists, school food and nutrition programme planners, technicians, policy advisors, researchers and international organizations supporting governments and institutions in this area.
